While it is a positive to see solid performances in preseason contests it is not a must for a successful season. What is important about the preseason is keeping your players healthy. This started as poorly as possible Cincinnati when starting left guard Travelle Wharton went down with a major knee injury in week 1 against New York. Since than the Bengals have had to put 5 guys on the IR including Wharton. Wharton is the biggest loss of the group considering it is nearly impossible to fill in a starting offensive linemen at this point. The other four players put on IR were not starters. Don’t let that fact fool you though, with all the injuries that occur during the regular season, this could affect the Bengals depth.
With the preseason winding down roster cuts are becoming more and more common. Today the Bengals cut defensive end Luke Black, halfback Aaron Brown, quarterback Tyler Hansen and guard Matt Murphy. The team must be down to 75 players by Monday morning and those cuts put them at 76. It is interesting that they are waiting until the last minute to make that last one, it is doubtful that it will be anyone noteworthy.
